Set up by Mr Miyazaki in 1985 with fellow director Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, the studio created an international foothold by going into partnership with Disney, while protecting itself from Disneyfication with a strict “no edits” policy that has been more or less obeyed. This compliment loses nothing in translation, since Studio Ghibli is up there with Pixar and Marvel as being its own global benchmark, with its own gently charming aesthetic, passionate fanbase and museum. The film’s UK and US releases are probably more than a year away, but word from Japan was that it is “very Ghibli‑esque”. Mr.Extraordinarily for a notoriously leaky industry, not a single drop of plot or character detail (both reportedly independent of the book) had escaped from what was described by Mr Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli only as a “grand fantasy”.McDonald’s Japan adds exclusive Hawaiian Burgers to its menu for a limited time.Beautiful summertime goshuin seal stamps are back to grace your temple-visiting record book 2 views.Burger King Japan’s new Crown The One Pounder is like a cheeseburger on steroids 2 views. Is Starbucks Japan’s first-ever nationwide Watermelon Frappuccino the hit drink of summer? 3 views.35 fascinating photos of Korea from 100 years ago (before K-dramas took over Asia) 3 views. We eat fugu pufferfish semen at a Japanese restaurant in Tokyo 3 views.Japanese countryside town makes giant corn maze full of oni for summer 3 views.Travis Japan members compete with the best dancers in Japan at Red Bull’s national dance finals 3 views.Spirited Away bathhouse spirits become self-righting dolls in new Studio Ghibli collection 4 views. ![]() Pokémon card shop in Osaka says it will refuse to buy cards from any Vietnamese people 4 views.Mountain Dew opening the Mountain De Yu public bath house in Tokyo for Mountain Day 4 views.Want to hear about SoraNews24’s latest articles as soon as they’re published? No details have been provided regarding the format (subtitled or dubbed) The Boy and the Heron will screen in, nor whether the translation will be prepared by the movie’s North American distributor, GKIDS, or is being done by a different team exclusively for the festival screening. The Boy and the Heron will however, be the first Japanese movie to be the opening film shown for an iteration of the festival, as well as the first animated feature to do so. This won’t be the first time for a Ghibli film to be showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival, which in previous years held screenings for Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, From Up on Poppy Hill, and The Princess Kaguya. The TIFF website designates this as the movie’s “international premiere,” listing a runtime of 124 minutes and describing it as “a simple story of loss and love rises to a staggering work of imagination.” “I look forward to our audience discovering its mysteries for themselves, but I can promise a singular, transformative experience,” added TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey. ![]() The movie’s Japanese distributor, Toho, announced the screening in the above tweet. The Boy and the Heron will be the first film shown at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, screening as part of its Opening Night Gala Presentation on September 7. Thankfully, the first confirmed screening of The Boy and the Heron outside Japan has been set, and it’s Toronto, Canada, that’s the lucky site. ![]() That wait is all the more excruciating when the movie in question is The Boy and the Heron (titled How Do You Live? in Japan), the latest anime from Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki, and having to be patient is triply tough when the movie’s purposeful lack of a trailer or any other preview images is keeping anyone who hasn’t seen it in theaters completely in the dark about what to expect. ![]() It’s a different story with anime movies, though, which often release in Japanese theaters long before they screen overseas. In recent years, online streaming has made near-simultaneous international releases for anime TV series the norm. Hayao Miyazaki’s new anime movie will be seen for the first time in North America in Canada.
